A sad day for me, now ex-Sufferlandrian

I’ve been a Sufferlandrian since the days of downloading mp4 files. I’ve been on this platform continuously since then, completing many Tours of Sufferlandria (and whatever we called that event after the Wahoo purchase). My current sub ends later this month and I just cancelled the renewal. For me - only me - the ‘craziness’ of Sufferlandria and the community around that was a motivation. Sadly, that particular type of enthusiastic support her has dwindled for me. I’ll miss the mental toughness. I’ll miss yoga. There are many Sufferfest videos that I’ll miss - but I’ve ridden every one of them often and there’s been little new in that department for some time. Really, I’ll miss the goat suits during the ToS, I’ll miss the spirited debates about which video is toughest, and I’ll miss engaging with like-minded folks here. Sufferfest got me to train, led me to good race performances that then allowed me to qualify for Team USA and participate in World Championships (!) - and for that I am grateful. But it’s all gotta end sometime, and for me, that is today (although I’ll try to get some Sufferfest rides in over the next couple of weeks before my sub sunsets).

I hope you find something that helps maintain and sustain your motivation for fitness going forward. I wasn’t a long-timer by any stretch; bought a KICKR Bike in January 2022, got a free subscription with it from my dealer, and stayed with it until May of this year, when I decided to let it lapse at least for the summer. Haven’t resubscribed yet, tried FulGaz and ROUVY trials but didn’t stay with either, and on Black Friday, ROUVY offered a half-price for 2 months offer that I took just to have something for the cold season upon us now. I’ll still ride outside much more than inside unless roads get too icy for too long, but ROUVY is at least a diversion for a small price.

That all said, I don’t see any alternatives out there that I ever enjoyed as much as I did enjoy SYSTM. For me, it’s hands down far more engaging than any alternatives I’ve tried.

My greatest issue with SYSTM is justifying the cost for something I use almost solely when weather forces me inside. I also sometimes choose it to get a targeted specific workout, (of which SYSTM has many excellent choices,) and occasionally I just want the ease of jumping on the KICKR Bike for a fast workout I don’t need to think about.

I suspect when the cheap ROUVY option is done, I’ll come back to SYSTM again, assuming it’s still around. If the annual subscription price was discounted more, I’d rather just stay on board, but when it doesn’t save me enough to justify carrying through the warm weather season, I’ll probably bail out again and do without until next winter. I wish Wahoo would see the economics of that for itself as well as subscribers. The warm seasons drain on resources must diminish greatly for those of us who ride outside, so it seems they would be money ahead if they retained subscribers straight through the year.
I’d have sustained my subscription without leaving had the cost been a bit more tempting…
And as some others inquired about the Black Friday deal, I also hoped something would materialize to draw me back… If it had, I would rather have returned to SYSTM.

First, you can never leave

Second, don’t take this as me trying to make you stay…but

These ALL sound like good reasons to stay.

So, on top of those reasons, there’s also a great series of daily mobility vids, some very recent OL vids with Sir Standsalot (which, though not my cup of pain shakes, some of them are tough AF and in some cases, arguably even tougher than some SUF vids). There’s some pretty great and exceptionally well thought out training plans (though admittedly they’re static and could use some improvements/refreshes in terms of ease of adjustability/customization).

Now, to your point about wanting some new SUF vids (count me here as one of many who are wanting the same). In the before times, we’d get one or two new Sufferfest vids a year. Clearly that pace has dropped off considerably since The Company took over and no new SUF this year (what, with Sirs David and Francois’s departure :frowning: ) but we did get 2 new ones last year (No Place Like Home in February and High Time in November 2023). And…Sir @Rupert.H has teased a new SUF vid coming soon® likely next year, so, there’s one more reason to stay.

Finally,

NOICE!!! Way to represent the greatest mythical nation in the whole wide world!

Now, one last thing, @giorgitd, I am not seeing your name on the honour roll of They Who Have Done Really Dumb Things To Acquire a Decal, perhaps I could taunt you to stay just a wee bit longer to secure your room in the castle, the beds are pretty suffing uncomfortable, I’m sure you’d love it:

I’m gone too, off trying other things. IDK, but it seems to me the rate of posting to this forum has gone way down, and much (most?) is about hardware rather than Systm/Sufferfest. That doesn’t bode well for the platform.

That’s a fair criticism of the forums. It’s kinda become the de facto forum for The Company since they don’t actually have a dedicated forum. So, the folks that buy their products will end up posting here.

Edit: I’ll add that I think the platform is safe as they’ve been doing a fair amount of work adding content and making mods to the Wahoo App. I see a future where the apps are combined rather than abandoned.

I think the biggest change in the forum can simply be attributed to the diminishing of the Sufferfest spirit and users.

From a user perspective it’s hard to gauge the popularity of the app based simply on this forum. But the app and this forum was originally for The Sufferfest only, and The Sufferfest users in the forum tho not a massive number were particularly close-knit, passionate, and active.

As the app turned into SYSTM and The Sufferfest influence was toned down and became just a small part of a larger app many of The Sufferfest users left for other places and the forum activity declined. SYSTM just doesn’t have the same type of active user-base. That’s often the case when something expands beyond a small original group. The original group was tight-knit and small with an intense shared passion. Many of that active base then leaves while a bunch of users simply looking for some technical help arrive and the feeling changes completely. So some have left and others have joined but it will never be the same again.

And the age of the internet has changed in the past 15 years. People just don’t come use these non-social media forums like they used to.

I don’t have any active stats from the forum or the app to fully back this up. But it does seem to me that the app is doing fine. It’s just that a lot of Sufferfest-specific forum users who were very active have left. And many new active Wahoo/SYSTM users just aren’t streaming in to fill the forum void even tho they are using the app likely in larger numbers since it’s now SYSTM and other Wahoo apps combined. Plus, many active RGT users came in for year before it was shut down, and they now they have mostly all left, too.

So maybe the forum is declining, and very likely The Sufferfest is too. But I wouldn’t go so far as to extrapolate that out to the full SYSTM platform and Wahoo ecosystem, as a hole. It’s possible. But I won’t make that leap.

Yeesh. Why can’t I ever write anything short?

100%.

Though I’d argue it wasn’t Mark Twain who said it, even if it’s generally attributed to him. Also, and of this I am fairly certain, Mark Twain was a Couchlandrian.

Wow, I did not appreciate the responses from a single post ‘giving up’ SUF / Wahoo X. THANKS to all who responded. Yup, had there been a BF/CM discount, I might have stuck around. And to those inquiring about my training moving forward…I have a coach, he pushes TrainerRoad workouts and that’s all good. We are on Training Peaks and they just bought IndieVelo that is now TP Virtual - and I get that free as a TP coached athlete.

Look…I’ve got the $ to subscribe. I just can’t find (for me) the value proposition that fits the price. There are some WX features that are unique and that I like. But the steely-eyed assessment is that those ‘wants’ are not aligned with the costs. Some of you have made nice arguments for staying. But, at least for now…I’m out. It’s been a great ride…

How is the Facebook group doing?
I am not on Facebook so I do not know.

I understand and it sounds like you’re in a good spot.

I’ve been riding IndieVelo for over a year and am now on TP-V for at least another year for free now. I enjoy bouncing back and forth between here and there (when I’m healthy).

And as long as someone is still here, we’ll keep the light on for you.

It’s not as active as it use to be, either. Tends to be a lot of the same faces. Gets spurts of activity usually weekly i think.

It also comes and goes and ebbs and flows. It picks up for indoor riding season and then again for The Tour that shall not be named.

At some point it might have been busier than this forum. But since it’s not linked with other Wahoo apps and products like this forum is then it’s now much less used. I can come in here daily for new activity. The fb page may often go days without replies or new posts.

Really miss sir @David.McQuillen.KoS and the old SUF crew.

…and the presence of the coaches. They often stimulated a great deal of discussion and enthusiasm.

Yes, I forgot about that. Definitely miss the coaches too. And sir Neal. That was huge as well when they could jump in and post topics or answer questions.
