All blue NM

OK so I’m messing around in the Wahoo App and see this:

On my 4DP athlete profile NM is my weakness, so those purple circles look promising. But my simpleton brain just sees blue workout profiles.

What am I missing?

Morning, I’m interested to see why they are all in blue, I tried to find the menu in my App to see if mine does the same and maybe defaults to blue for some reason, but I cant see it anywhere, how did you get to it?

I think is because the power in these workouts is all below threshold, hence all blue. The NM benefit comes from the high cadence, rather than actually going to or near your NM power. So it’s a way to improve NM without the fatigue induced by hard sprinting.

@Anne this is in the Explore tab of the Wahoo App, not SYSTM.

@sir_james.p so it’s cadence tricks? Ok I’ll believe them I guess I was expecting sprinting though.

There’s something odd going on with those workouts. The titles suggest they are something else but the profile and description says they are all duplicates of the cadence builds workout, which is just 6 intervals of building to max cadence. It’s something I do periodically and have found quite effective, for improving pedalling efficiency and my sprint. I often do it as part of an easy week. A way to get some good training benefit, without the fatigue.

Agree that there is something wrong here.

The “Trails” series of workouts are listed in the Wahoo app (albeit with the duration and profile of the Cadence Builds workout), but they don’t exist in Systm.

I mean I’m okay with it. Just being in the Wahoo app. That’s where I took the screenshot from.

I actually prefer doing workouts in the Wahoo app except for SUF workouts where the video is engaging.

If I’m going to do a no vid I’d rather be in control of the data fields.

“To each, their own”; I think that’s how the saying goes.

Using the WA works for you, so that’s great. As for me, I never use WA for workouts, only Systm.

I’ve done these hitting around 180 rpm. I think the cadence hypothesis is what’s going on. NM seems to cover both heavy watt efforts and high cadence coordination to try and improve muscle ability to handle extremes (power and spin) with some amount of steadiness. At least that’s what it seems. Too bad sir Neal isn’t around here anymore.

(also, that “on location” with Nicole Frein - Hobart/Tasmania is also a low effort ride with NM for which she provides a light explanation during the workout)

@Steve_Q Agreed - this looks like a bug. I am seeing the same thing. Copying @Helga to take a look. It seems like a mix and match of workouts - Cadence Builds layered on top of the Trails “workout card” from SYSTM - not even a workout. I am not sure why I am actually seeing it as I don’t think trail rides are at all my weakness.

Replying to myself. I officially don’t know what I’m talking about because I thought I did these, but haven’t. I thought the ones Richie showed were the no-vid “cadence progression” rides, which typically have those NM dots (like 3-ish) at <FTP.

I can’t even find the rides in the jpeg. Regrets for the false info.

Yeah apparently these particular ones are weird (@Rupert ?)

I was just skeptical about cadence work actually doing NM, but I haven’t really tried it and was curious about what others thought.

I guess it’s not a replacement for sprints but can’t hurt?

@richie_engineer If you go to the MTB plan you will see these - in SYSTM they are just calendar placeholders. Somehow they were paired with the workout graphic for one of the cadence build workouts since the placeholder workouts never had graphics.

See below for screen shots.

It is odd to have these on the weakness list since it is just a placeholder workout essentially saying “go ride outside” and really only pertains to a mountain or gravel rider.

I remember when I used to ride the track in the 1980s, we’d do roller workouts with our track bikes that got us spinning so fast it was scary unstable unless you really had your form down - like 180+ rpms or so. Using 4" drums, this is possible (a LOT harder on 2, or even 3 inches b/c resistance will almost require you to switch out cogs.)

So I guess leg turns and leg force are both part of NM training. Like you said - “can’t hurt” (unless you fall off the rollers…)

Yes, like THIS:

Lol I’m currently restricted to riding inside due to injury so that’s ironically an accurate weakness

In first sight I assumed these were personal recommendations based on my weaknesses.

They are all identical and have the same workout description :man_shrugging:

Whatever the intention of these is meant to be, it’s sure failing as far as I can see :man_shrugging:

So, NOT like this then?

Yes, see the Cadence Build and Standing Starts workouts.

No. I’ve NEVER EVER done that in my entire life. Ever. God’s honest truth…
