Building Blocks as beginner?

Oi there,

are Building Blocks aimed at intermediates or can I just jump right in as a beginner?

I just got a kickr core and since I’m happy with my Bolt and my Rival I opted for Wahoo Systm as a training platform.

I started with a full frontal which gave me some number on my stats (NM865/AC356/MAP201/FTP174). Then it told me I should train my MAP before even considering raising FTP - so I created a Building Block centered on MAP.

Yesterday was MAP Progression 1 - with 2 Sets of 8x30/15. So far so good, it was demanding, but did not kill me. From what I’ve read the way with intervals is to raise the bar slowly. That being said: tomorrow it scheduled 14 Vise Grips as my second training, which seems to be the epitome of suffering lol.

Should I consider opting for a Fitness Kickstarter/All Purpose Plan instead first? They seem to be a lot more tame, to a point I fomo (fear of missing out) on “optimal gains” But I also fear to overdo it with too hard a Building Block and burn myself out rather than get better…

Thanks for your input
Daniel

Welcome to the forums @pvt.doojee

My 2 cents, if you don’t have a specific goal you’re training for I’m sure you’ll be fine with the MAP building block set. I LOVE 14VG!

Don’t underestimate the all purpose plans. If you have any particular weakness, you’ll get found out! :smirk:. Personally, I think they are great for all around gains and I’m a firm believer in building up ALL your skills (i.e. don’t just focus on your strengths and ignore your weaknesses).

If you’re chasing badges (something I don’t really do), then the recent focussed plans might be good.

If you’ve done a 4DP test, then virtually all of the workouts will be scaled to your abilities so I don’t think it matters too much that you’re a beginner.

I’d never done any training before I started using Systm so when I started I went straight for a 12-week All Purpose road plan. I saw massive improvements.

Thank you all, it seems to me that both Plans are okay and the Building Blocks are fine for beginners as well.

I did the 14VG this morning and it was very fun (BLEEDING EYES! lol), but … it was too easy I guess. I’m pretty beat now, but was nowhere near death “at the end of the second 2min interval”, which was promised in the description and in various posts here. So I guess my power numbers are a little bit off and I’ll have to adjust them accordingly in future workouts.

I think I just stay with it for now, do another FF after and a 12week after that - after all you guys praised the 12w and I already look forward to it :smiling_imp:

Or if you will try to get new numbers. You could try to do the Half Monty test, it is much easier to get the pacing right compared to Full Frontal.
And it will update your FTP and MAP.
