Full Frontal with Kickr Core today! Help!

Hi all, I am doing a Full Frontal assault later today and just got a Kickr Core this past week. I did Primers yesterday in level mode to get ready for today but the power was jumping all over the place. The other issue I had was ramping up some power and it doesn’t seem to react quick enough for 5 second information. I did the spin down when I set it up and picked the wheel/tire size of the wheel that was on my bike. I don’t want to kill myself for FF if the data is going to be garbage.

I would postpone FF until you get the issues with the Core figured out. It isn’t worth the physical effort to have unreliable data. One thing you could do is parts of FF (skip around to NM and FTP tests) to see how the trainer reacts and what data is captured. Don’t go all out so you can do FF in a day or two.

Do you have ‘power smoothing’ toggled to on? That will give a 3-second average readout (the raw power will be in the saved data, though).

As far as trainer lag…yes there is a little bit of a delay on the display (I had it on my 2018 Kickr and my V2 Bike). You will see the same with ERG mode as you lead into and taper out of an interval.

Here’s my response from FB

If you’ve only had your Core for a week, before jumping right into FF, if it were me, I’d do some of the Open vids in level mode, testing out the different levels to see how they respond to different efforts at different gear ratios. Depending on what gears you have available, you might find that for the sprints, you’ll want a higher level than for the MAP or FTP efforts or you might find that one level works well for all 4 parts of the test. I’d also read everything in the support page about how to pace yourself for FF https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021387460-How-to-get-your-most-accurate-Full-Frontal-Results
As for the forums, there’s loads of threads on the topic with tons of great tips/advice etc. Good luck!

If you have it connected with Ant+ you might want to use Bluetooth instead. Connection is more solid and responsive.

And make sure power smoothing is turned off. Both in SYSTM and also for the device in the Wahoo app.

Out of curiosity, why would power smoothing need to be turned off?

Yes, Sir @emacdoug, why are you saying to turn power smoothing off?

I prefer to keep it on cuz I like the flatter graphs (even though I know it’s an illusion).

More for troubleshooting. And more so in the trainer settings rather than in SYSTM. That can cause havoc because it makes the trainer feel stiffer than it should which can make you feel the need to fight against it.

Yes, smoothing in the SYSTM app during workouts is just visually illusory.

When I got my Core replaced by Wahoo CS a few years ago it took me a couple days of fiddling to get the settings right before which it looked and felt strange.

This is news to me, Sir. I’ve always had it turned ON in the trainer settings AND in SYSTM.

That could make a big difference in trainer feel since turning it on in the trainer settings in the Wahoo app actually affects the trainer. It’s not just visual.

So if you’re used to it being ON but have it OFF, then you’ll find the trainer feels looser and your power is more variable.

But in my case, if you’re used to it being OFF but have it turned ON, then you find the trainer feels stiffer and less responsive and your power is… well, smoother.

Again, that’s not been my experience. And, I can’t find anything in the support site that supports what you’re saying. I’m NOT saying you haven’t experienced things differently but here is what I see and it’s consistent with what I’ve “felt” since 2017 and a Kickr Snap and 2018 with a Kickr v4

“ *Additional ERG Settings:

Accessed through the trainer’s sensor details

ERG Mode Speed Simulation: This setting simulates speed based on power input for greater accuracy of speed data. Enabling is a personal preference, will not impact overall trainer functionality, and not required (most who train with power are not concerned about speed data).

ERG Mode Power Smoothing: this setting enables smoothing reported power to eliminate small inconsistencies in pedal strokes, making power graphs appear less erratic. Enabling is a personal preference, will not impact overall trainer functionality, and not required.”

Yeah. I don’t know if that’s the way it’s supposed to work, but it definitely made a noticeable difference for me with my Kickr Core.

It’s not me, it’s you! Lol

fyi, I’ve started a poll in another forum
