Hey everyone. First post here. Just got a Wahoo Kickr Move and SYSTM and I love em.
Now for the issue. I recently did a half Monty and got an FTP of 200. That test was easy as it said my FTP when I was doing the test was 150 (likely the default for those without an FTP set). So I finished all the ramps no problem.
But now when I try to do a new HM it still says on the screen (the text that gives you instructions) that my FTP is 150 (and it gives a lower MAP #). Once I see that I exit the HM cause I’m not going to waste my time doing this again if it’s not accounting for current FTP. On the SYSTM App, under Athlete Profile, it shows my new FTP of 200 - so why isn’t HM updating that for the new test?
I tried logging out and restarting.
Bonus question - when Hm says my ftp is 200 is that my actual 1-hour FTP or just my 20min FTP? If it’s the latter, am I supposed to do 200*0.95? So is my 1-hr ftp only 190? I’d like to know as I have multiple other apps and I need to update the FTP on them manually for consistency. I’m also curious
I tried searching for topics like this but had no luck. Sorry if this has been answered and I missed it.
Congrats and welcome to the forums! Don’t have the Move myself, but it’s an interesting concept.
So, yeah, if you completed the ramp, you started with an “estimated” FTP too low - the goal is to go in with an FTP estimate that will crack you somewhere up the ramp to set your “true” FTP.
Can’t visualize the issue with your FTP setting going into HM - it should definitely be going off what you’re set to in SYSTM. What you could try before you load the HM is to manually set your FTP in your profile. If you blew up the ramp at 150 your first outing, maybe set it higher?
FTP is typically “defined” as the power you could theoretically hold for 1 hour. Even though most ramp tests only run ± 20 minutes, it’s still supposed to reflect your 1 hour pace. That’s one of the reasons why the 4DP - which is an hour long - is ostensibly a more accurate assessment.
Thanks for the very helpful reply! Is there a way to know what the FTP is for a HM without waiting the 15 or so mins for it to tell you on the screen what your FTP is set at? I ask because I can’t skip the trainer video and see what it’s set at but perhaps it’s just a few trials and errors. I’ll try to manually set my FTP and will report back.
It’s also possible that the screen just always says 150 FTP as a default even though it’s higher - but I doubt that. Last time I just shut it down as soon as I saw that so I couldn’t tell if the ramps were actually harder or not.
I believe the ramp section in HM is set by your MAP setting , which if I am reading your post correctly, is set lower than your FTP.
As an estimate, I would set MAP around 20% - 25% higher than your FTP, so 240w - 250w based on a 200w FTP.
Once you have completed HM both your FTP and MAP numbers should update automatically.
If HM uses your old FTP, you can use the arrow key (presumably the up arrow) to increase the start point of the ramp. That way you will hopefully reach exhaustion before the end of the ramp.
EDIT: did not fully read previous post, so nevermind this post as @JGreengrass points out.
HM doesn’t use the FTP from your athlete profile as @Dafydd said it uses the MAP value from your athlete profile to set the steps on the ramp.
If your MAP is set at zero then using the + - keys to adjust difficulty doesn’t work 105% of zero is still zero.
@HarveyBirdman if you completed all the steps on the ramp when you first did HM then the test is invalid, HM is a test to failure you have to fail on one of the steps for it to establish you MAP which it then uses along with HR to establish your FTP in the constrained effort. What are the FTP and MAP values in your athlete profile and what was the power for the hardest step you completed on the ramp?
If when you go into your athlete profile and your MAP value is zero or less than your estimated FTP you should adjust your MAP value to 20-25% above your estimated FTP.
