thanks @Namaku! That was a really interesting article on the nasal system. I’ve always assumed it was all interconnected up inside and really questioned the reality of left and right nostril breathing. This really helped with understanding how that could be working!
It would be interesting to know if one could train the nostrils.
Yeah, I see no way at all that not having the ability to use the hivemind to ask questions will go poorly. sarcasm
@Namaku That is so weird! Thanks for sharing.
I have the same issues, Sir Eric; most days I give up and just breathe through my mouth, especially when alternating nostril breathing is part of the session.
Anecdotally, I have noticed my congestion often seems less after a cycling workout, potentially lower intensity ones. I just started paying some attention to this, so haven’t tracked the trends.
As for allowing more oxygen…I’m not sure how it would, given the oxygen is absorbed in our lungs.
And amazing job on so many days in a row. Daily yoga was one of my NY resolutions this year, and thus far have managed it.
Oh that’s fascinating. I have struggled with bad colds all my life. Apparently I nearly died as an infant from sudden congestion. I have anyways realized either one side or the other was congested or blocked. When I first start exercising I always have a runny nose the first half hour or so.
It never occurred to me until about two years ago that I may have been having sinus infections. That got me to using neti pot rinses. That has literally changed my life. In addition, I added a UV light to my furnace to knock out viruses from air as it goes through. I haven’t had a bad sinus infection since.
Love that article. I’m off to research yoga danda now!edit I’m certain I have read research shared here that nose breathing is more effective(when possible for us mere mortals).
So I do my utmost to nose breathe through all workouts, when possible.
@Eric @eric yes the silence is concerning, and just to pre-warn you, you are asking someone who knows nothing about everything
so……..I do wonder if this new directive/plan is coming from someone way higher who doesn’t know us or their staff, who maybe has an ideology for the company that does not include valuing the staff and customers who make the business a success. Is there an element of fear involved? We know we are not to be feared but does the company know this? I have never been on a Forum before this one, the main reason being that I feared they had an element of nastiness. So I shut myself off from them. I understand it if they don’t like to see any criticism, but there is another approach which is to engage with it. This Forum is wonderful as it is. I feel completely at ease here to ask anything without any fear. The people here are fantastic, they are funny, supportive, knowledgeable, encouraging and never, in my experience, nasty. I love it. We are good for the company, do they know this? That’s why I don’t want the change, and I want to keep the ability to post new topics, I don’t want to lose any of the good people that are on here. How selfish am I! ![]()
How Dare You! Not only did someone bring up a topic NOT started by Waboo, you have the audacity to like it. What is wrong with you people, wanting to use this forum for helping this community. Don’t you know that you are not allowed to think on your own? Your overlords didn’t give you permission to share anything useful. Just for that, I am not renewing my subscription.

Out of curiosity, how often do you use the rinses? I tend to have running nose when cycling (always the left nostril, so there’s no cycle to be seen here
), I’ve started trying to nose-breathe for a few weeks (seen a short documentary about it, so the topic is perfectly timed), and rinses might help.
if you wanna stop your nose running, just give it a freakin bicycle ![]()
Humidity, temperature, and nitric oxide I believe, or something like that. I think a lot of pieces about nasal breathing might go into the actual details.
Glad I’m not alone in that, although it’s usually my right side, lol.
Fair point; which would be less about being directly absorbed through the walls of the sinus cavity, and more about moderating temp/humidity so your lungs can do a better job, right?
Years and years ago I was told that nose breathing only, especially during recovery between intervals, helps more oxygen get to the working muscles. It’s hard to force force yourself to nose breathe only after hard Z4/Z5 working sets. Trust me, I’ve tried. Your body just won’t let you. It automatically defers to how it’s going to get the most oxygen in until your HR and breathing come down significantly….at least in my case…..
…..
I don’t follow any routine, I wait to feel worse Congestion than my normal(which is slightly congested on a good day due to dust exposure, cat dander etc).
For example I haven’t used any for about a month. But if I start feeling more congested I’ll rinse twice a day, once before work and once before bed. Sometimes three times a day. In winter sometimes I feel like I have rinsed daily all month although I know it wasn’t really the case.
The difference is quite amazing since I can feel what I assume is the salt and soda in the formula, soothing and reducing the swollen tissues over time. It really opens up my breathing ability. The extra volume feels so amazing after bad congestion. I should try it before a workout more often…. Maybe it will remove the runny nose?
That’s part of it, as I understand it, yes - and the effect of vascular dilation on oxygen uptake.
Yes there is a relevant thread. However I suspect the point of this is to as much or more to illustrate the obnoxious stupidity of keeping us from initiating new topics as to discuss nasal breathing.
More Nitric oxide apparently. I can breathe through my nose on a very easy session but start to panic if I cant get enough oxygen in and go back to mouth breathing as the effort ramps up
Personally found concentrating on improving my diaphragmatic breathing to be really important with nasal breathing, especially as the effort goes up through Z2.
Been trying to practice that more, and it seems to help quite a bit, but I still need to think about it more than i’d like at the moment.
Not sure if it’s useful, but this paper has some interesting discussions about the whole set of breathing patterns during exercise - with a focus on cycling (body position etc)

Don’t you mean “hijack” instead of vandalism? Vandalism is something hooligans do. Sufferlandrians are not hooligans. With that being said, this is the thread that says “We’re shutting you out”.
Your comment here made me ROFLMAO
!! You have a most wonderful day @JohnK !!
