This is an issue with a LOT of the videos, both up and down. You can have a 2 or 3 minute effort where your heart rate shows going from Z1 to Z4 but it never gets there because the effort is too short. Like you, I donât pay any attention to them in quick changes. Totally unrealistic.
I promised to do this after my new numbers from HM & FF. I did HM last week and my progress was good, both FTP & MAP up around 10%. Unfortunately I didnât get to do FF. A work project had me tied to a computer for about 14 hours a day for 4 days. Not riding for that long is really depressing. Plus, sitting that long wreaks havoc on my artificial hip. I was still and sore all day today.
But I finished before dinner so I threw Revolver on the schedule for tonight. I felt that would certainly loosen up the hip and with the new #s, what could possibly go wrong.
The new video is really nice (downloaded the updated version). All except for the one minute of the warm up when the video just stopped. I download every video so there is no reason it should freeze up, but it did. The time kept ticking off, but no recording of cadence or power, or speed. On the graph it looks like I just stopped for one minute and let the video run. Finally it reloaded the opening of the video and then jumped to where it should have been in the video. Very frustrating.
I made it through pretty strong although my overall numbers donât reflect it with the one minute of missing data. Nice update to the ride, now if you can get it to run properly and you have a winner.
Howdy yâall. New to indoor cycling training and SYSTM. Question for experienced trainers and/or @David.McQuillen.KoS. I did Revolver this morning. Loved it but then again I love to suffer. I did the workout on Level 1. For the intervals I hit the target cadences but was always about 10 watts below target power. Conversely, during recovery I was always about 10-15 below in cadence target while being 50 to 60 above power target. My FTP is 192 and I stayed on the big chain & middle of the cassette for the entire workout. Is there something Iâm doing wrong? Am I not maximizing my training benefit? Thanks in advance.
@Jeffrey Maybe try the small ring in front and/or increase the level. Different trainer and watt targets sometimes have issues. I am generally in 39 / 14. I have a Kickr and just leave it in ERG mode for revolver and it works fine.
I forgot to mention i have a KICKR Core and i am in 34/22. I followed the programs suggestion of putting my trainer into Level mode. I will give ERG mode a try next time.
As youâre in Level mode, have you tried changing gear? One usually leaves the gears alone in ERG mode.
Iâve read different opinions/experiences about how to navigate Level Mode (with all saying one gear for ERG but choose the right gear). Do I understand Level correctly in that it provides a consistent resistance throughout the workout unlike ERG that varies to achieve desired power output?
Thanks again all for your responses.
Level mode is a bit like riding your bike outside (sort of). Youâll need to adjust cadence or gear or both to meet power targets. If you canât reach the power target when you hit the cadence target, youâll either need to increase your cadence or shift up.
Similarly, if you overshoot the power target during recovery at desired cadence, shift down.
@Jeffrey 22 might be too high. I had the core and now have the V6. With both - and frankly any trainer - be purposeful with cadence changes and the power adjustments should settle in fairly quickly (5 seconds max). I find that when I get ahead of cadence it doesnât really work in ERG.
You understand ERG correctly: you leave the bike in a single gear and it will adjust resistance to hit the power target. There are slight delays if there are big changes. And if you change cadence quickly, it can take a few seconds to catch up. Iâve always done revolver in ERG.
You seem to misunderstand level mode. Level mode mimics riding up a hill. Level 0 is almost flat. Level 1 is about a 1% grade. Etc. when you pedal faster, it gets harder because it simulates both air resistance and the gravity to climb the hill. So if you want to increase power, you either have to pedal faster or increase the gear. If you want to hit both a power and a cadence target, you need to experiment to find the right gear. Because acceleration and deceleration exaggerate power changes (just like riding outside), it takes a little time for power to stabilize after you change cadence or gear. If you stay in one gear, you will never be able to hit both power and cadence targets. Mire i precisely, you might be sheer coincidence hit them for some power/cadence combinations; but it is exceedingly unlikely that you will hit them very often. Bottom line: in level mode, you have to change gears.
Tl;dr: Level mode is you riding your bike. ERG mode is you riding THEIR bike. ![]()
Level mode is you riding your bike. ERG mode is your bike riding you. And it may not be prettyâŠ
Also funny! ![]()
Might consider re-masterimg âGetting Away With Itâ. Or at least pixelating the part where Mike twists a competing brandâs headset onto his bars ![]()
I second this question about use of Level or ERG. New to training (Merry Holidays!) here but MTB a long time. Finished Revolver this morning for first time and had a similar experience of fishing for the right gear. I saw the suggestion on the video of Level mode but left it on ERG for first 6 goesâŠfelt like I may not make it holding steady so tried shifting to Level +2 which was what I did my FF and HM on. Immediately felt like it was too easy or too hard depending on gear. I switched back to ERG for remaining 8, erâŠ
, and made it. However, was wondering if I SHOULD have been in Level the whole time. Either way, Iâm pretty cooked and struggled hard on the last 2 intervals. Glorious, afterward.
I guess my question isâŠshould I be looking to develop the Level management and ride the sessions like revolver on Level as suggested? I think I did alright on FF and HM with Level mode but honestly, I really like the set it and forget it. Being that I have only seen about 6-8 sessions so far since new years, will I be needing Level really frequently?
My first post and new to this, so thanks for patience.
I suggest ERG for Revolver if you are on a wheel-off trainer (KICKR CORE). For a wheel-on trainer, like a SNAP, you might want to try ERG first and then if you canât keep it going, Level. This ride is designed to take it all out of you as well.
Its been almost a year but last night was my first time riding the remaster. I really liked the new footage in the velodrome of the riders preparing during the warm up. The first set of intervals timed really nicely with the track racing and then wow just wow the second block chasing MVDP and WVA was awesome.
Not so into the new soundtrack, but then I have been doing the original since March 2013 ( before the 1st remaster) so my legs have developed a Pavlovian response to the original soundtrack.
Erg mode was fine as always on my direct drive Jetblack Volt smart trainer, in 39:21 ( I have a close ratio 12-25 cassette so need to be in 3rd sprocket for a nice chainline)
Last time doing it was 1,5 years back, new footage is great- suffer is the same (in a positive sence of course). Really âenjoyableâ after 1,5 weeks of base efforts.
