SYSTM MAY Challenge: The Lead Group

Wahoo May Challenge: The Lead group

Welcome to May. As the outdoor season hits full stride, we’re shifting our focus to the high-performance demands of real-world endurance. This month is a Global Pro-Level Masterclass, a sophisticated blend of immersive world-class roads and technical performance data, all designed to build a complete, resilient engine.

There is a difference between riding an endurance event and dominating it. Inspired by the tactical, varied demands of professional stage races, this challenge focuses on versatility. We aren’t just building an “endurance diesel.” We are lifting your Max Aerobic Power (MAP)—the ceiling of your performance—to ensure you have the “pop” to respond to attacks, hold the wheel when the pace surges, and find that final acceleration at the finish.

The 4 Workouts

Complete these four sessions to earn your badge:

  1. The Sufferfest: The Best Thing in the World
    • MAP Development: Built around repeated, punchy attacks that simulate the sharp end of a pro race. It’s designed to lift your aerobic ceiling so that “hard” efforts eventually feel manageable.
  2. Inspiration: Phil Gaimon Wins the Tour
    • Motivation & Pacing: Experience the unique, gritty perspective of legendary climber Phil Gaimon. It’s a masterclass in developing the mental fortitude and sustainable rhythm required for unpredictable terrain.
  3. NoVid: Threshold Over-Unders (4 sets of 6)
    • Lactate Clearance & Grit: The classic “on/under” session. By alternating between just above and just below threshold, you train your body to recover from surges while still maintaining a high, uncomfortable pace.
  4. On Location: French Pyrenees - Cirque de Gavarnie
    • Strength-Endurance & Sustained Climbing: A journey into the heart of the Pyrenees. This session focuses on low-cadence strength work followed by sustained threshold efforts on a massive scale. It is the ultimate test of a climber’s “diesel” engine.

Oooh interesting mix for the May badge. I was planning on a 4DP this month, but this looks like more fun.

GvA, I hear you saying do both. Time is limited though.

Wow, TBTITW is a piece of art!

I was so pleased all the way through that workout this morning. What a brilliant sector of Sufferlandria that is. All the music and all the text artfully matches the efforts. sigh I could go on but I’ll stop. This is the crown jewel of the May Challenge.

Indeed! I’m saving it for last. It’s just my luck that I rode Gavarnie and Phil Wins in late April. But I’m riding them again because I can’t resist getting a badge!

Rode with Phil last night while he “won the Tour.” He noted,I am sure truthfully, that his time up Mt. Ventoux would have been better if it weren’t summertime. But I noted, indeed truthfully, that he had declined the kind offer of an ice pack whilst going up…
