The Knight Rides 2025

Yes, I am attempting my sixth KOS quest this Friday, Nov 21. And while I may be choosing to suffer voluntarily for nothing but the honour, glory, and victory of the greatest mythical nation (and don’t forget the decals/stickers), many millions of people and families in whichever country you may be living in are suffering in a very non-GvA approved manner with no choice in the matter.

Rather than ask you to donate to my own pet charity, I ask instead that you donate your time, money, or whatever you can spare to help your local food bank, homeless shelter, or other organizations that assists struggling and low-income families or children in need. This could be Three Square, No Kid Hungry, Save The Children, Habitat for Humanity, or Feeding America. Simply use your heart and your imagination to find a way help those in need. Working together we can reduce the needless suffering in this world and make it a better place to live in for all of us.

Was nice to ride with the group this morning even for just a short while. My legs were happy for a bit of spinning, but my undercarriage was less than thrilled to the reintroduction to my bike saddle. 15 minutes was all I was able to manage. But was nice to see so many Sufferlandrians this morning!

It was a glorious day that brought the Celebration. A group of eight Knights and Citizens that had come together to cheer the valeros Sir Evan @emacdoug. The ninth? It was no other than the Knight himself that had achieved what few could even dream about. It was the start of a glorious day with heated sprints in th harsh season if winter.

After the hardships of the last day, Sir Evan was only joining for a shorter time, but alone the determination to even show up was a feat worthy of praise - even for a Sufferlandrian.

The ride for today, while being mostly flat, was not for the faint of heart. With 11 sprints, two being KOM-Sprints, it was packed. As Citizen Chris @Chris_Wright was not here, the new uncrowned King of Sprints, the one to beat, was of course Sir Ruben @Medina81. The first of those sprints was still a bit less sorted, but being the Knight he is Sir Evan took also up the gauntlet, forfeiting the rest that was due.

If you think many sprints are hard, how about chaining a triplet of sprints right one after each other? The crackling electricity in the ride and the suffering was magical.

I shall not withhold, that Sir Ruben did not win all sprints. Just almost all of them. We challenged him with mighty power, relentless in style.

After the first four sprints it was time to catch breath. Lower my max heartrate I had hit and look forward to the small climb we would ascend on both of the 2 laps.

Dame @Isa was by then enjoying no less then three green jerseys, a price she would hold all the way to the line.

After the hard efforts there was finally time for chatter again. Secrets were revealed and two of the great minds that had gathered today discovered the same truths at the same time. This moment revealed gravity.

It was a cheerful mix between plans for the next summer vacation, the joys of suffering and astounding feats of alien languages.

The sprints stayed strongly contested, an all our battle of force. A pure demonstration, that Sir Ruben had not only the mastered of power, but impeccable timing.

Soon it was time for the second lap.

(630 Watts in a longish sprint? Nah, no near good enough to beat a Sir Ruben on form.)

The sprints were so intense, that even The Sip™ was recorded at 1:14 hours in the ride, as the 2nd triplet of sprints was blocking the proper time.

We discovered each sprint, that the “last” sprint you felt you had, was just the one before the next one.

Having lost a few to chores, our group was finally down to 5. That was when a new plan was made: How about finishing the course in under 1 hour and 40 minutes? Would that not bring a quick grin to GvA’s face? So from sprints we went to Timetrial, with sprints inbetween.

(Relentless in the Night, now it is a TT. After 10 all out sprints.)

After leaving so much on the road already before, we went again for it. It was doable by calculation, but pretty close. All we had to do was keeping the pressure on for a bit more than 15 minutes. Sounds easy? It isn’t after that many sprints.

But lead out by the power of Sir Ruben, now in his usual role as engine room of the ride and with the very strong power of Citizen Alex @wmalexmann and Sir @Azrine we closed in to the line. The last sprint (TT into Sprint? Ouch!) was messy. There was not much I had left in the legs.

As true to every Knight Ride, we gave our all. We crushed even that, with 30 seconds to spare.

Thank you all for joining this Celebration in true sufferlandrian style! With your help we honored this achievement of Sir Evan with a special ride.

I hope to see most of you (except the relentless and valiant sprinting Dame Isa :cry:  ) next week again, when it is yet again time for

The Knight Rides!

It was a real treat to enjoy a full, unabbreviated knight ride with you all!

Major doffing of the cap to Sir Evan, who managed to not only sit on the bike the day after knighthood #6!!! But also to sprint! Unbelievable.

I had such a great time doing sprint after sprint after sprint with you all. Even though after lap 1 I thought to myself my legs have likely had it, my Sufferfest FF category held true to type.. A sprinter. I can sprint. Not a lot else :joy:this was the ride for me! See you all when life and the budget align once more :volcano:

I was spinning VERY easy, and definitely did NOT participate in the sprint! :upside_down_face: That was all Zwift rubberband. I averaged 40w for those 17 minutes. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Over the years after doing many distance running events I’ve found that walking and light exercise the day after an event - especially when my legs are sore and stiff - helps loosen the muscles which gets the blood flowing and flushes out the lactic acid and other metabolites out which helps reduce the soreness and stiffness much faster than total rest.

My legs are still a bit sore today, but after yesterday’s short spin and a 30 minute walk in the afternoon they are feeling a lot better.

The thing that will likely keep me off my bike for a week (other than the holiday) will be undercarriage soreness more than anything else! I should have switched bin shorts sooner and more often.

I enjoy reading this and thank you for spending the time to write these up @Blackwater my Saturdays are definitely something to look forward to if I don’t have other commitments. I will practice my german a bit more so that we can talk about kebabs instead of donuts. heh heh…

Oh that makes more sense! Well, if you ever need someone to misunderstand zwift and tell exaggerated tales of glory… :joy:

The light spinning makes sense for sure.

As for undercarriage recovery, I wonder if knighthood on a recumbent is the answer

Congrats to Sir Evan @emacdoug on his 6th Knighthood, but I am disappointed you didn’t ride the full the Knight Ride ‘Cotty style’ :face_with_hand_over_mouth:. Also kudos for admitting that he was just riding banded in the sprint and preserving the integrity expected of a Knight of Sufferlandria.

Dame Isa @Isa, the beauty of a banded Knight Ride on Zwift is similar to our beloved Tour of Sufferlandria where graphs were forbidden. It takes away the inconsistencies of different abilities, ages, equipment (smart vs ‘dumb’ trainers) and EGO. Everyone rides to the best of their ability and desire and has FUN doing it.

Hopefully I will be able to return to the fun after I heal up. I’ve been gone the last several weeks to prepare for El Tour De Tucson’s 102 mile road ride this past weekend. A crash at 65 miles into the ride left me with a concussion and acromio-clavicular separation but didn’t end my ride. Adrenaline, pain and anger fueled the final 35 miles (#morethanyou).

Wow, rest up,and heal well Chris! That’s a wild ride you had there. Chapeau.

I look forward to keeping virtual company at some zwift point in future!

Gah!! That’s the wrong kind of suffering! That’s also a massive effort to finish. Hope you heal up fast!

Very sorry to hear about your crash @Chris_Wright and the resulting injuries. Wishing you a speedy recovery so we can have spirited sprints on our future Knights Rides. Much respect for taking inventory and deciding you could finish your event. Cyclists are a different breed huh?

Thank you Sir Ruben. Crashing is a part of cycling and doing it long enough (43 years) or far enough (7500 miles this year), it will happen. Besides it was just getting to the ‘fun’ part, the hills of Angonia or more correctly Mission Road hills where the infamous Tucson Shootout group ‘ride’ happens each week (although El Tour rides in reverse).

Hopefully I will rejoin the Saturday morning group rides at some point this winter. Yesterday’s recovery ride was high Z2/low Z3 and the post concussion headache was still there. But I need to work my Z5 sprints and Z5 AC power for playtime at our new velodrome.

The Knight Rides! Black Friday Shopping (On The London Pretzel)

Ah, it is that time of year again? Quick, look around in the Knights Castle! Have the Suffermatresses become dull? Are the flogging stations worn down from steady and heavy use of all the Knights? Are there enough Bottles of Real Pagne in the cellar? Do we have still enough comfy chairs around for all the new Knights that will soon appear, isn’t even Citizen Alex @wmalexmann already giving the Castle Gates a good long stare?

It is the highest time to go shopping, restock and prepare for the next year in the Castle. No better (and cheaper!) time to do so than on a big shopping tour on Black Friday (well, the Sufferlandrain time zone helps here rigorously….) in the City of Traders.

We start downtown London and go (or rather ride) from there. This will be a shopping treat….

Join The Knight Ride! Black Friday Shopping HERE!

This ride is banded, so no one is left behind!

Everyone’s welcome, Knights and Citizens, BBC and all friends. Even if you don’t like shopping and just join for the ride.
Every Courage Coin will be used to bolster the storage of The Castle and the City of Agonia.
Guaranteed 100% GvA approved and Couchlandrian free.

So when we go up Box Hill I’m guessing we all put this on in the background and play it on repeat until the top ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Yf6aVAS3w&list=OLAK5uy_kVk_I8-dyiCPafoQOUlcegkkyZI73Y-3k

Love the writeup Citizen Blackwater! Like Sir Ruben said, it is almost as much fun reading your reports as participating in the ride! The Knight Ride served me well as an opener session because I had a great day on Sunday’s CX course. The course was in great shape and the conditions were about as good as it gets…tacky dirt/mud…near hero dirt which allowed everyone to really push the speed in the turns! We were ripping through the open field part of the course and a group of us 60+ riders were chasing each other and keeping the pace high too. After a brief detour (I followed someone who turned too soon and we ended up riding through the pit!) I got back to it and passed every rider who passed me during the detour…mistakes are very motivating. I ended up with my highest peak power and highest average power this year, I didn’t stay for results because it started to rain and I had a 2 hour drive home but I felt really good about being able to sustain the suffering for the whole 45 minutes.

That is the shopping done for this season! Castle looks nicely stacked and prepared. If we would have bought more, there would be no more place for the to be Sir Alex @wmalexmann left.

But it started out rainy.

The shopping group, 12 people strong, headed out dauntless. We knew we could get warm in every weather. The main feature beside shopping was the smaller climbs, Fox Hill and Box Hill. The route itself, over 50k was not too hard but on the bit longer side.

(Yes, me being not in good shape meant I head more time or photos…)

While we still don’t know how Citizen Alex will exactly storm the castle, we were trying to help him storm the brain about it. Whatever it will be: It will be awesome.

(Look! Towerbridge! Now even with sun. But did we miss the turn to the shopping mall?)

We were joined this tour for some time by the brave Sir Evan @emacdoug who was still recovering and ready for his second breakfast soon enough. But shopping makes hungry, right? Also again with us was @Chris_Wright again, after his crash still banged upped, but showing a very strong and powerful performance also on the climbs.

(They forgot to show the road to Agonia on the signpost. Luckily we know THAT way…)

(Power up! Here comes the climb! Fun sufferlandrian style.)

With the first climb done, on top The Sip™ was recorded and it was time to get some breath. Everyone who might have not noticed before, Sir Rich @rrutis was missing sadly, so there were no records downhill to be gained. Especially not with having to transport the decorative Iron Maidens we had procured for the “massage parlor” of the Knights Castle.

A look to the watch brought then another question. Would we finish our ride in under 2 hours? Doable? Was this question for Sufferlandrians? We upped the tempo on the second climb and the joys multiplied.

(Powerful Engines at the front: Sir Ruben and Chris, behind you see Marie/BBC and me doing our best as well.)

After a great second climb it was time to quickly calculate. Our nominated local expert for difficult time calculations Sir @Azrine quickly crunched the number. Still doable. We pushed harder. Then the suddne idea, would we even be able to make it in under 1h 58 minutes? Time for the TT mode!

(Tower bridge from the other side. You can see us chewing the stems…)

With a huge push to the line our ride ended - successfully a small handful of seconds shy of our refined deadline. Classy suffering from all who put out the watts all the way to the finish.

(Yes, my Watts suck, but I actually was happy to make it to the line at all that day… I’ll see if I can be in a bit better shape again on the next one. )

Thank you all for joining for this ride! Next week hopefully Sir Alan @montgoma will be with us as well again. But most importantly, I hope to see all of you there as well, when it is yet again time for

The Knight Rides!

(Invitation will follow tomorrow or Thursday, as soon as I find the time.)

The Knight Rides! The Flogging (On Achterbahn)

Another custom imported by the numerous immigrants to Sufferlandria is a especially beautiful tradition.

Rooting in the ancient european traditions of celebrating the memory of Nikolaus/Klaus/Claas/Niklas on the feast day (6th of December) he appears often accompanied by one or more minions. After asking each on if they had been well behaved that year or having been lacking or mischivious it is then decided if there will be given treats from the huge bag or punished with strikes from a rod or in other numerous ways.

As Sufferlandrians usually pretty no nonsense the best and most important of this tradition was taken from it. So naturally there is now the celebration of The Flogging. And the best thing? Everyone can get it, no matter how they did last year.

This ride will be neither short and there is tons of climbing to do. Not one but two grueling climbs await to dish out a unforgettable festive day experience.

Join the celebration of The Flogging HERE!

This ride is banded, so no one is left behind!

Everyone’s welcome, Knights and Citizens and all friends. Even if you don’t celebrate and just join for the flogging.
This ride has Lasergoats posted on every climb, please mind to be uncomfortable at any time.
