I know I need a goal, a challenge, to focus on. The need to achieve is high as it feeds my self esteem and when you feel good the feeling spreads out to those around.
Periodic goals top up the self esteem tank … an important cycle which doesn’t hang from a garage wall.
I spent a lot of time crossing oceans in my 20’s (a few decades back) and gave quite a bit of thought over several months to what I’d like on my tombstone. I settled on “he improved the quality of life for those around him”.
I’ve tried to deliver to that ever since, revisiting it many times in my head. My self esteem tank is key.
Nice again.I’m A’s [{(though can B if more adequate)}].
The process is fitting perfectly into the rest of my life.
The expected positive outcome is that I am to feel better about myself .
If the process or the outcome would affect other people in my life, then positively,
since feeling better about myself, would induce feeling better towards and about them too.
Should do easily enough
Yup, I can see the positive outcome (though I wouldn’t be doing it other wise to be fair)
Yes it will affect others, indirectly.
Smart Goal: Complete the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hill Climb Practice Ride in late July.
Personality Type: ESTP at work, INFP at home. I have a very exacting, technical job that requires above-average social skills, but I’m a bookish ski/surf bum at heart. As an MBTI Step II certified coach, I realize that the descriptors are meant to apply to our “home base.” However, we spend so much time at work that I think it’s reasonable to keep both constructs in mind.
Process, created with help during a Call with Coach Andy:
NOV-DEC: Building Blocks - Base
JAN-FEB: Building Blocks - MAP
MAR-APR: Building Blocks - FTP
MAY: Building Blocks - NM
June: All-Purpose Road Plan
July: Building Blocks - Recovery
These questions are a bit fun. Although the answers tell me to talk about my goals, I usually keep them close to chest, even though my answers state I’m extroverted (to which I know). I only give basic goals, like; I just want to finish the race. I never tell anyone the time, or place I want to finish. Those belong to me.
I am very literal, analytic and matter of fact. I create spreadsheets with formulas from past races and current training trends on speed and power. Again, it tells me my goals should be simple, tangible and attainable; I don’t do that. My goals are hard and most out of reach, but I pursue them non the less and I get excited when I make move towards them.
I have always been a problem solver. That’s literally my job! LOL I always look at the problem and not the person/people first.
People are unreliable, unpredictable, and emotional. Problems are just obstacles, mathematical and something to overcome.
I don’t overcome people. I cheer on my biggest competitors (it makes them hate me more!) I believe in mental toughness (military background) and that I can will and tell my body to press on. I do the same for my friends with positive encouragement.
So far, this line of questions has not made me rethink my goal setting, but has solidified that I know who I am, and what I want to accomplish. I can’t wait to read/answer Part 4/4.
So, to share my goals, something I don’t like…
I have three IM 70.3 this year. Goal 1 is to finish every one of them. Goal 2 is to crush my St. George World Championship time from last year.
I have one full Ironman AZ at the end of the year only three weeks after World Champ 70.3.
Goal 1 = Finish it, set my new baseline for 140.6 races.
Bring on questionnaire 4!!!
I am very late to this, but I’ll put out a few goals for the year, as SMART as possible:
10 laps at the Oregon 12 MTB race (~180 km/110 miles, 3200m/10000ft) in June
FTP >= 4 W/kg (based on my trainer power meter, however accurate that is) at the end of indoor training season (I’ve been at around 3.8-3.9 before, so think this is doable)
100 runs >= 5km in 2022 (after doing about 10 in 2021, no time goals, just getting out and running regularly again)
Now for the personality questions:
1: BBBBB (no surprises here, although I do think of myself as a social introvert, as I do enjoy the company of others, just not being the center of attention)
2: AAABA (I think the goals I’ve set are measureable, and achievable, but still challenging enough)
3: ABBBA (I was almost in between on most of these)
Thanks for getting this conversation started @coach.jinger.g .
Day 4 of questions to help you revise your original goal. For each of the following pair of characteristics, select the one A. or B. that accurately describes you. Even if you agree with both options, think about how you approach most life scenarios, and select one. Answer honestly with how you really are in situations where you are free to be yourself.
A. organized, orderly
B. flexible, adaptable
A. plan, schedule
B. unplanned, spontaneous
A. structured
B. easygoing
A. preparation, plan ahead
B. go with the flow, adapt as you go
A. control, govern
B. latitude, freedom
IF the sum of A. answers is greater than B. then you do not need a formal process to set your goals as you incorporate the method into your everyday life. Even though it is a natural process, your goals must be explicitly defined. One thing to work on is listening and considering the advice of other athletes, trainers, and coaches to help modify your specific plan.
IF the sum of B. answers is greater than A. then you treat goals as a fluid process and a plan is a just an outline that can be modified at any time. Even though it is a less defined method, you achieve your goals with a high success rate. One thing to work on is to limit procrastination and consider asking a single person to review your progress on a regular basis.
Struggled a bit with this one but leaned to A so there it is. While the exercise hasn’t really changed the plan or the goal it was helpful to put it in the forefront of consciousness for a few days in a row. Thanks for this @coach.jinger.g
I am very late to this, and will have a proper look and think tomorrow when I’ve some head space. But I thought I would share my goal which is to complete the Trans Alba bike race. I entered it for 2020 and it was cancelled for that year and last. I know my head will let me down quicker than my body, so really need to concentrate on my mental strength.
