NEW SUFFERFEST WORKOUT: The Pain Shake 🄤

Isn’t the butter workout some OL now?

Butter is not in the library anymore.

I’m sorry, but if I have to explain the SF magic of the original videos to you …. Well I won’t.

All the oldtimers know the difference and it’s sad

Thanks for all the positive feedback so far everyone!

@rom66 we have called The Pain Shake a new workout as we did replace the Butter workout with On Location Costa Blanca: Puerto de Tudons

We’re sorry to hear the Pain Shake wasn’t to your liking and you found it boring. If you have any constructive feedback of how we can spice things up for you we would love to hear it so we can consider it for future workouts.

We do not plan on replacing anymore SUF workouts (we only removed any we were no longer able to license the footage for) and have some more projects going on in the background to bring some more new content between now and the end of the year. Hopefully you will stick around to enjoy it.

Hi - overall, a great workout. As others have said, the music lets it down a touch, primarily as I think there are only 2 tracks used per block, potentially looped, making it quite repetitive, and the music is quite bland. The recent Mike Cotty had music which was much better in my opinion. I’d like to see more variety in the music used per block, and, if possible a return to whatever music licensing approach was used for the original SUF videos, where the music appeared to mimic better known songs, without presumably carrying the associated royalties. Alternatively, more like the recent Mike Cotty video, or even the type of music used in GCN videos, which I assume also has low or no royalty associated with it. Otherwise, this is a great step forward and gives me hope of even better things to come.

@rom66 I didn’t ask that - I asked ā€œWhat specifically would you have done differently or changed? What footage or music do you suggest?ā€

I have done all of the workouts multiple times. To me they are just workouts so it would be helpful to get your perspective.

Great to have a new Sufferfest video, it’s been too long!

I found the workout itself good, enjoyed the structure, footage was fine, Sufferfest references etc on par with some of the more straightforward workout videos of the past.

I echo the sentiments regarding the music, for me this is the thing that lets it down more than anything. It was just bland and generic. Only having one song with lyrics was a disappointment and next time I used this video I’d use my own music if it doesn’t get updated, which does somewhat defy the point of the sufferfest videos.

Now I obviously have no understanding of how licensing works for music, what budget, constraints etc were in place, just wanted to provide some thoughts on it.

Please keep working on more sufferfest content, just with better music! And if we can somehow have There Is No Try back in proper video form, even with new footage, I’d be eternally grateful.

I’ll put my opinion in too. First off, great to see a New SUF workout. The race footage was great.

The workout was just what I need. I’m guilty of pushing through an interval then pausing for breath. With Pain Shake you can’t do that as the point is to ā€œrecoverā€ whilst still working. I carried this through to the Chores today.

I would have liked to have seen an increase in pressure for the last MAP of each set. I was reminded of Attacker and wanted the ramp at each set conclusion but I know nothing about designing the physiological task. (I very much loved the original video of Attacker when Loulou triumphs.)

I really didn’t like the soundtrack. My thoughts were that it was all drab ā€œroyalty-freeā€ musack. Reading above I see others thought the same.

Will I do it again? Yes, definitely. It’s a welcome addition for me.

If a friend wanted to start using SYSTM for the first time would I recommend Pain Shake as part of their introduction? No, I wouldn’t. Sorry.

Did pain shake this morning. In short, I enjoyed it, it’s a great workout and a welcome addition.

I really liked the workout, tough but doable, good storyline, plenty of SUF humour, footage was good and complemented the efforts well. Lot of comments about the music, I thought it was fine, there are workouts that I think have better music but that’s all subjective.

I don’t think it’s quite on the level of the very best SUF videos. All the elements are there and very good but in the very best there’s a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it all gel together, such that the end result is greater than the some of its parts. Pain shake doesn’t quite achieve that but I think it’s as good as plenty of other workouts in the SUF library, I enjoyed it and will do it again. More of this please.

I enjoyed the ā€˜what’s in your pain shake’ feature, appreciated Rupert’s cameo in a Sufferfest t-shirt.

As you asked, Milk, Banana, Peanut Butter and Cocoa. #WahooPainShake

Also enjoyed the workout, great to see some new content.

My only complaint would be the uninspiring music, although subjective. Is the original butter workout available for knights?

No, they lost the rights to the footage I believe so it had to go. It’s now an on location with Mike Cotty, one of the Costa Blanca series. Would rather it had stayed SUF but I do like the OL rides, good addition to the library and provides some variety.

Very nice work: Hard, engaging, fun

I wonder if some of the current sufferfest licensed music from other workouts could be reused/recycled into this one? There’s a pretty big library.

Did it today and liked it. The music? Impossible to match everybodies taste, impossible to pay the fees for excellent music. I regard myself as a sort of audiophile snob, but I caught myself playing air guitar during the recovery sections.
The footage: World Tour Women’s Amstel Gold Race. What more do you want? I enjoyed it, I will do it again. I regard it as a proper SUF-Workout.
Well done! And a big thank you!

I had a go at this one and enjoyed it! I see what people are saying regarding the music but thats not a major issue (and could be amended). The humour was good and the race footage was good.

I didn’t finish it as I have a 5 month old that can be quite disruptive to my plan training (and all of my other plans lol). But will have another go at it soon.

Just wait until they’re 15 and it’s all Dad. Dad. Dad…

(But do enjoy that time now. It truly does get missed.)

Oh yeah the little ones get big too quick … but it’s nice when they’re big enough to refill a bottle and get you more snacks.

I enjoyed this one!

Fun story line.

Possible improvements:

  • I actually liked the music as such, but I think it becomes repetitive because the interval/tempo/recovery tracks are so similar. Maybe find something more laid back for recovery, and something high energy beats for intervals?
  • Where footage is repeated (dropping the bottle), maybe make more out of it - eg ā€œHow often do I have to try and catch this bottle?ā€

I’m pretty sure a lot of the original Sufferfest music was also license free or at least single-payment licenses. But just goes to show that you can find great music in any setting if you try hard enough. License-free music doesn’t have to be rubbish. Much of it is awesome.

Thank you, do you perhaps know which one, I checked the four Costa Bianca series items and one states as Recharger while the other seems to be high cadence MAP efforts based on description.
