Power settings variations

Anyone have any issues with Test results…ie a sudden drop in FTP by 20%=even though I had been training at +3% to my FTP- did a couple of retests and not much difference-wahoo are not responding to my requests for support

I got a few questions to start.

Any change in equipment used to do the tests on? And what is the equipment (trainer, power meter, platform version etc)

Have you ridden some vids with the new numbers and they’re feeling 20% easier?

When you look at the power graph, are there power dropouts?

Training for 2 years on a wahoo kickr.
My tested …half monty…Ftp…was 207…im 60 and newish to cycling…and was seeing steady improvement. I worked at 207 +3% over the last 2 months…test result 164… my partner also tested …she normally works around 175…tested at 158…using the half monty…tested 2 weeks later and she got to the 2nd last ramp…only to see a 10% fall in the Ftp results…am i missing something…much appreciated

HM itself does have some issues for certain rider types (it either over or under estimates FTP). But what would be most telling is whether workouts now feel significantly easier for you with these new numbers.

For HM to give the best result are you giving it literally everything you’ve got and only stopping at the point you just can’t turn the pedals anymore? Stopping before that can skew the numbers downward.

Have you done the FF test? It tends to be more accurate though does take some skill in pacing and is a LOT harder to do.

One other random question. Are you both using the same heart rate monitor and how old is the battery? My HRM gives me an artificially high HR reading when the battery is on it’s way out. I have a particular memory of a zone 2 power and a 178 bpm reading. Check what your HR is between the two please? If it’s higher on the 2nd test this might be pushing your FTP reading down.

Interesting…the HR…monitor was on its last legs…just got a new one…i will retest soon

The workouts do feel significantly easier…to compensate i am working at +20%…However this doesnt seem to work well on many of the workouts…i have down perhaps 6 or 7 HM… so i am used to the approach…thanks

Yeh, it was a case of someone who had noticed improvements in performance but not in ftp upon testing. Not strictly the same but her ya go

As for your case, rather than bumping intensity up 20%, I’d personally just tweak the FTP number in your athlete profile to get your best ROS (return on suffering :wink: )

I did the FF…my partner did the HM…she got to the 2nd top ramp and her results decreased by 10 %
