Initial remasters were done fast and ham-handed. That’s kind of to be expected when they are rushed.
To actually find matching footage and make it fit existing videos takes more time.
Now that Wahoo has lots of feedback I am hopeful that with more time and care they will be able to make the SUF videos closer to what they were.
We know they will never be the same. Even when the SUF team had to remaster videos like Fight Club and Recharger the new videos still felt different.
I haven’t been riding the new remasters since for the most part they are rushed and uninspired.
But I am hopeful that with all our feedback and the benefit of time the updated remasters that incorporate our feedback with be given a lot more care and love. And that Wahoo will also listen to our feedback and make any additional adjustments that may be needed. That’s really all we can ask for. They will never be the same as the originals, no matter how much care is taken. But hopefully they will at least still feel SUF-ish enough to allow us to enjoy the new versions.
First, @Rupert and Wahoo, thank you for NOT turning our beloved SUF videos into No-Vids as that would have been absolutely horrible!! Second, I am finding it hard to believe that this end to a licensing agreement came unexpectedly to Wahoo but, I could be wrong. If it was completely unexpected, I can then understand the “rush” to remaster so as not to turn the vids into no-vids. Would it be possible to get a little more information on the “unexpected end” part of the licensing agreement. Thank you.
That was strange, when I first opened to take a look there was no video, just a blank screen and subtitles. Opening a second time I got the “remastered” video though.
@botski We should take some comfort in the fact that they, per Rupert, could have turned all of the videos into no-vid workouts. As much as I don’t really like the remasters, I most likely would have never done them again as a no-vid and, from what I have been able to tell, they retained the original music from the original videos. With that being said, the remasters definitely need work. I mean, if I’m supposed to be grinding up a climb at 60rpms then the on screen video should match the effort/interval and not have video of a peloton on the flats spinning at 90-100rpms. There are several instances of the on-screen video in the remasters not matching the prescribed effort/interval as they did in the original videos.
Then that says they haven’t listened to the feedback at all. I get they need to change the footage for licensing reasons and for what ever reason they are needing to do that in a hurry, but that doesn’t mean they need to de-suf, that’s an active choice by the company to change the feel of the videos. Post the feedback they could have chosen to leave this one alone (footage aside) but they haven’t. I had been hopeful when they reached out for feedback but appears they are just wanting to appear to care about what their users think, they aren’t listening. @Rupert , can you shed any light on why the feedback has apparently been ignored?
Won’t be re-instigating my subscription auto-renewal just yet…. If they continue down this path despite the feedback, I’m not contributing to funding it.
Hopefully he responds to you. I’ve asked for clarification on the “unexpected end to a licensing agreement.”, especially the “unexpected” part and so far all I’ve heard is crickets. Maybe he “can’t” respond.
I very much doubt I’ll get a direct response to that, but rather by tagging just hoping that it will at least get read and therefore the company hear it. All we can do is keep feeding back that we aren’t happy with the product. Then if they still don’t listen, stop paying for it.
Hi @sir_james.p ,
Thanks for the tag, we are taking on board the feedback.
For Joyride, the voiceover of Dylan was specific to the video therefore by changing the footage this felt very disjointed and did not flow. We have kept the original soundtrack for the video though and replaced it with newer footage we do have license to and the video does contain Sufferlandrian references.
@Eric, for the licensing of footage, I do not have any additional information to share other than the footage we had is no longer licensed as we have previously explained.
Thank you for the reply, @Rupert For me Joyride without Sir Dylan’s voice on team radio and cobbles is no longer Joyride. Sadly the whole storyline is lost.
