We still have a few more we’re updating, we’re aiming to have this task completed by June 30 (yep it’s a Monday!) and then we can rebuild the SUF from there.
Happy to extend the questionnaire until then so all feedback can be submitted.
Gaah!
Fwiw, imho, providing vid-by-vid, time-stamped feedback at this point is kinda futile until/unless on-screen cycling content matches the efforts of the workouts. And, until/unless that happens suggestions for “rebuilding” the SUF are gonna be misplaced.
If you have more SUF vids to “remaster”, it would help to know which ones. Then, if we see the content matching the efforts, an extension of the feedback form could be helpful in helping us to help you.
Clarification please - it appears, based on the “Suggestions Box” link in the first post from Rupert, that Wahoo only wants feedback on the text on the screen. They do not want feedback of the video changes they made. Is this correct? If so then there is no need for me to go through minute by minute of the abomination that is the updated Power Station to note its inane video.
I have updated the original post with a list of videos to be remastered.
For the feedback please provide what you can, the easiest to implement and bring back SUF is if you are watching and see opportunities to name new characters or Sufferlandrian artefacts.
So, essentially, pretty much every SUF video is being remastered. I hate to think what they are all going to look like and with pretty much all SUF humor and references removed.
A sad day indeed.
So you want to have some input to new content or not?
Thanks for the updated list (it is indeed a sad day as Sir Steve @washsaint says). There’s a LOT of history in those vids, some of which already had been quite artfully remastered. Eg. Recharger and The Downward Spiral. In any case, I do appreciate seeing the list and knowing what’s coming down the pike.
Just so we are clear, are we to understand that the following vids will all remain untouched for the forseeable future, as they do not appear on your updated list?
- 14 Vise Grips
- Blender and Blender Mini
- Extra Shot
- Fight Club
- Half Is Easy
- Hell Hath No Fury
- High Time
- Long Scream
- Nine Hammers
- No Place Like Home
- Revolver
- Revolver is Easy
- SUF Idol
- Tapers (not in the SUF channel but VERY much a SUF video)
- Team Scream
- The Bat
- TBTITW
- The Chores
- The Cure
- The Omnium
- The Rookie
- The Shovel
As for new “character” names and other SUF stuff, are you saying we are stuck with the new cycling content “as is” in the vids on the list of already “remastered” versions? Cuz, it’s not bad cycling content, and in fact much of it is VERY good. It’s just that more often than not, the new on-screen efforts don’t match the workout efforts required and, that, to me, has to be the starting point. Before any character names, before any SUF elements, before any storyline suggestions etc etc
The storylines and Suf jokes are what makes them repeatable–every time I do one, I see something new because I might have been chewing my stem at that spot last time.
100% agreed. But…in order for a storyline (especially if we’re gonna need new ones) and SUF humour to make sense, the efforts (at least the hard efforts) need to match the content.
Like many on this page…
-
Make the footage match the interval (The "remastered Power Station is just embarrassing - low cadence intervals and the footage is freewheeling downhill?!? Thin Air used to be an absolute favourite but is no just dull and uninspiring).
-
The footage needs to be mainstream and of exciting bits from races. No one wants dull footage of riders we’ve never heard of from a 2.2 race… There are certain bits of footage / music combos that are just iconic - you should do all you can to preserve them. Think Cancellara on the cobbles in AVDP “who let him up here”. The helicopter image at the start of the climb in Thin Air. Wiggo’s TT in TINT. I could go on and on. I look forward to these bits every time i do a video.
-
Leave the storyline / text alone and find footage to match. I don’t understand how anyone can find a little bit of banter and humour offensive.
-
And don’t EVER edit the “impossible tarmac of ribbon”.
I cant believe that i (we) even need to specify any of the above.
Cheers.
Correct, if we don’t need to remaster videos we are leaving them as they are so this list remains untouched.
So that we can bring these back for everyone., we will be working to add a video back to:
- Local Hero
- The Hunted
For the video footage, we are not stuck with it ‘as is’ but it needs to come from the same race. We are reviewing the feedback and making a list of things we can re-address to tweak the new videos.
Plenty of videos show footage from different races (e.g. AVDP), so why? Choosing from different races would actually make it easier to build a decent story
Oh my. You (@Rupert ) are having a hard time of it right now.
I’m going to assume there are a bunch of terms and conditions around all of this that have commercial impacts if broken, which Wahoo are unable to disentangle themselves from … whether it’s from way back in history or whatever. For example - money has been exchanged to covering a specific race, or specific race footage, and it has a long expiry date. Or vice versa.
That must be a bit heartbreaking for the people who want to do the work.
Hope it all works out. And of course commercial agreements are not going to be shared online to the world.
I’ve often wished I had the money to buy a couple of these amazing cameras, and the skills to ride some MTB stuff, and create a video that could be handed over with zero copyright for you folks to do with as you please
The problem with that is for footage to be race relevant then the rights become owned by the race, not the individual.
So all individuals can do is do their own amateur solo riding.
All the best for the next set of editing !
well, that’s at least a little less sad
Thanks for responding, Rupert. Info, even info we don’t like to hear, is infinitely better than no info at all.
Like Dame @IsiSchneider_KoS says, that’s gonna make things a lot more difficult than I’d think it needs to be. If the race footage you’re using doesn’t contain the types of efforts that the workout is demanding, you’ll have to use a different race. Or change the workout. But if you’re gonna change the workout (potentially messing with the sport science behind it), the race footage, the characters, the story, the humour and all the other SUF elements, then it hardly makes sense to call these vids The Sufferfest and The Company may as well just create a new category (which really isn’t a bad idea, tbh).
At any rate, until the footage is either replaced or, as you say, “tweaked”, I’m going to hold back further feedback on the vids. To me, this is truly the minimum standard. Please let us know once the footage matches the efforts.
This is exactly right. If the footage doesn’t match the efforts, then it looses the engaging nature that makes the Sufferfest videos stand out. Otherwise you may as well be on trainer road and just play your own generic race footage.
I do get however that if they had to do this quickly, then they may not have had time to cut and match the footage, but this now needs fixing. I don’t get why the suf humour had to be removed, footage that wasn’t under licence restrictions, like in primers, was removed and why text had to be changed. If they were in a rush then surely it would have been easier to leave that. That was an active choice and also needs fixing so that the videos don’t just become something quite bland, which again would erode the USP of Sufferfest videos. That could all be quickly reverted however.
Please try to save the uniqueness of the SUF videos and stuff that is nowhere else and only in SYSTM which brought and kept us all here!
It is kinda hard to give specific input without knowing what can be changed, is going to stay, your limitations and most importantly your goal with the videos and Sufferfest culture, humor etc.. Maybe I missed some announcement about what wahoo really wants to do. I only read you want
Is it some SUF? The trend over the last years was the continued removal of SUF.
Or do you want to bring the videos back to all of it’s SUF glory and maybe even improve them?
You could try to just save the remasters, keep the storyline as close as possible with just new footage and some adapted jokes to still make sense to the new content. Then pour your creative energy in creating new awesome Sufferfest workouts while retaining the old ones as close as possible to the established original?
I will try to avoid clicking the update button of any video content in fear of a downgrade.
There is no input possible for a remaster of Recharger yet. Is that upcoming?
If you are remastering Recharger please look into the following input already generated for the last remaster 3 years ago:
Please retain the energetic positive flow of the Recharger video and the relaxed low standing sunny flowing rides along the windong roads through the green and woods. The fun and banter of the riders. The beautiful scenery and city’s.
I really enjoy Recharger every time I do it. Check the comments already posted.
Best of luck for that hard job, the bar is already set very high and criticizing is always easy.
You aren’t the only one feeling befuddled. It’s like Wahoo doesnt even know what it purchased 6 years ago.
Hi,
Was it not possible to extend the agreements? And why was it not foreseen this would happen as that seems like a pretty important business activity to keep track off to possibly renegotiate and renew in time or timely find suitable alternative video material to preserve the story lines?
Anyway, it would be really sad if you cannot keep the historical storylines as that was what made me join and stay since 2015 and this talk about soften things does not need to be contra keeping the old style stories and videos, just keep separate libraries for people with less tolerance or in worst case a separate knights-only library.
And I hope you have all old videos archived safely and could read-release them when/if you can renew agreements and/or find suitable story-preserving video material.
Based on recent comments from Sir David on FB, he says he left them will all the licensing information, so it should’ve been something they were aware of ahead of time.
I get people’s frustration but can we please be a bit more pleasant and respectful towards @Rupert. He’s doing his best and if we loose this guy then there really is no hope.
The gist is we just want the footage to match the effort of the workout and also to retain the original storylines and text. That is all. No need to be hostile.
