OKT workout :shark::shark::shark: Drafting was essential to make it on time! :articulated_lorry::biking_man::dash:

After an early morning workout along the Tama river near #Haneda airport (TrainingPeaks categorised it as a night ride, 4am) with my team mates, I had to commute to Kodaira (just under 2h) and start my office work.
In order to do so, I rely on the ‘big guys’. Drafting in the slip stream of trucks is the only way to make it on time.
Not recommended and certainly not on bikes without disc brakes.
This way I was ‘flying’ almost all the way up along Tama river.

See you next time.
Stay safe, stay strong.

This was my first race in Okinawa. And it was amazing!!!

After the neutral zone 2 guys immediately jumped off. Since it looked serious, I decided to follow and so did another guy. Quickly we left the peloton behind and out of sight. We lost the 4th person and the remaining two guys were clearly stronger than me but also understood that 3 are better than 2 and helped me a lot. Nevertheless, on the 2nd of 3 climbs Mr. ARCC gapped us and soon there was a gap between me and #2. On the descent I caught him and we worked a bit together but eventually the peloton caught up on us. At this point we were in the breakaway for over 1 hour and I thought a podium position is certain. Anyway, now I was in the chasing group and things looked still good until 500m to go when a bunch of 7 started the sprint and both of my quads cramped. At the finish the whole group was just over 2min behind #1 and I finished 9th with 3sec behind #2. Really happy. We had a strong breakaway. But still feeling a bit… aaaaarrrgghh

Man, from the video thumbnail I thought you might have taken the win! But sounds like still a great effort and good result!

Haha, well, that wasn’t my intention. I may actually change the thumbnail. Although, I was for the majority of the race in a breakaway of only 3 guys and felt like a podium was secure

7th Nissan Stadium Cycle Park Festival Challenge 180 Division

After last year’s 5th place I was keen to make it onto the podium this year.
However, the Tour de Okinawa, antibiotics and a pulled wisdom tooth took their toll.
But perhaps I was simply tired.
Anyway, the race was amazing and I tried to get into the breakaway. Unfortunately my attempts were not successful. Those guys at the front were really strong. From this point on I tried to find a group I could work with together. However, that took a while. Approximately 2h during which I wasn’t able to catch the escape group (which eventually lapped me once) but was also too fast for the peloton behind me, meaning I was on my own. Eventually I was able to catch up and even caught some of the escape group which lapped me.
In the end it wasn’t enough. But I am happy nevertheless since I’ve made it into the top ten. Specifically, I got 5th (5位🏆). The same result as last year. But this time I did one lap more and was faster on top of that.
I really like the course. Technically, but not too hard.

First commute of the year (along Tama river, #多摩川). :biking_man::mount_fuji::cold_face:

First commute of the year and I decided to make it an extended one along the Tama river. The commute to Kodaira took just under two hours and was pretty cold.
But the big reward was Fuji-san. White and majestic as usual at this time of the year, visible from Tokyo due to the clear and crisp air during the winter months.
This time I am showing only the part along the Tama river and not the full commute.
I hope you enjoy it and perhaps get motivated to get out into the cold instead of the indoor trainer.

See you next time.

Second commute of the year, this time along Arakawa (荒川) :biking_man::national_park:

For the second commute of the year I decided to make another extended one but this time along the Arakawa. In terms of time the commute to Kodaira took just under two hours the same amount of time as some the Tamagawa. Even from the other side of Tokyo Fuji-san was still clearly visible. White and majestic as usual.
again, I am showing only the part along the river and not the full commute.

Today I decided to extend my commute from 1 to 3 hours and also increase the time riding along Tama river.
Again, it was worth it. cold but clear, crisp blue sky giving a beautiful view on Mt. Fuji.
I hope you enjoy the ride perhaps on your indoor trainer. I am glad to endure the cold for you

Shimofusa criterium - Ossan’s Cup

Maiden voyage!
My first race on my new Canyon, aka Nebula.
I finished 11th. Was hoping for more but it was a really strong field.
So, I don’t want to complain. The weather was perfect and the tarmac fast.
The good thing about this category is that everybody is very experienced and thus there was not crash. However, some guys really cut my line frequently in a very dangerous way.
Anyway, the power was there but tactically I wasn’t at the top of the game. It was a good start into the season though.
I hope you like the video.

Yabitsu night climb and descent

After many years of closure, the east side of the Yabitsu pass has finally opened again. So, I took the advantage of ‘Golden week’ and finally rode my big ‘super climb’ route which I created many years ago on Strava but never used for the east side was closed due to a land slide.

At first I was a bit hesitant since it was a very spontaneous decision and I started quite late (around 9am). It was therefore clear it’s gonna be a looong day.
It was further stredged because I had two punctures but luckily had enough tubes with me. After finishing the Okutama climb and crossing over to Yabitsu I actually had to do the whole climb and descent in the dark. Nevertheless, the vue was stunning (I guess you won’t see too much of it) and moreover it was super exciting.
I hope you can enjoy it despite being recorded at night.

(HINOHARA) descent - May 2024

After fixing my second puncture I finally made it down the Hinohara descent after climbing up the mountain from Okutama. It’s a nice way down the mountain which goes straight into the next climb leading me eventually to the Yabitsu pass (which I then climbed at night, see my former video).

:sunrise: :shark: First ウガンダ of 2024 (solo) - Tamagawa workout :biking_man::dash::sun_with_face:

It’s never pleasant to get up at 3:30 AM for an early morning workout. But once you’re on your way it feels so amazingly satisfying.

Today I did a solo workout. 3 laps, no time for more. I tried to keep 40 km/h but my legs were just too tired (no surprise after just 3.5h of sleep). Anyway, it was a beautiful morning.

In case you wonder why I got frustrated at 00:32:45 well, my saddle tilt suddenly changed dramatically after the bump. At first I thought it’s the seat post. But surprisingly it wasn’t. The sensation however was pretty much as if.

HITACHINAKA!!!
I really love this race.
A very technical course with a lot of tricky corners which can be extremely dangerous depending on your skills (or the skills of the people around you).
I started this race with only little to no expectations because I had a strong and nasty cold for about a week which made even the primers/openers on the day before almost impossible for me to finish.
So my decision was to simply hang on.
But never underestimate ADRENALINE!!!
I felt great immediately after the flag dropped and was on a mission from the very start.
Again, I didn’t manage to hide in the bunch and spent too much time with the front group. but at least I managed to avoid pulling the field. The only time that I tried to be at the front was when the corners came. Too dangerous to be within the group and a huge risk of getting dropped if at the back. So every time the corners came I was sprinting to the front. A strategy which paid off.
However, on the final sprint I didn’t have the explosive power anymore and eventually got 6th in my age category (4th if I would have started in the age free category).
Same result as last year. However, while I was very disappointed last year, I was very satisfied and joyful this year considering my health condition only less than 24h before the start.
Looking very much forward to more racing in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned for more

Next race will be the #FujiHillClimb and then #KawasakiMarineEnduro
Let’s see what happens there

Another, BRONZE !!!

I improved my time by almost 2 minutes compared to my last effort 2yrs ago where I managed 1h:24m:05s

Today’s improvement is not exactly what I was hoping for. But considering that I gained 3kg over the past few weeks and still managed to improve so much gives hope.

Nice job. I rode three Mount Fuji challenge on Zwift and did me in. I hope the real world ride is much better.

I did the Zwift ride last week as well for preps and it was gruesome. The real Fuji climb is much better and overheating is not the problem. But altitude starts to play a role. Anyway, I enjoyed it like hell while I didn’t enjoy the Zwift ride at all!

I did the Mt Fuji climb on Zwift on Saturday. That was painfully long. Was an eternity. The gradient was right up my alley at least. Nothing too steep. But I can only imagine how much better it would be to do the real beautiful scenic climb instead of the dull glowing Tron version.

Yes, the gradient is really nice. The worst part is the first third. Afterwards it’s really nice and your can even sprint certain sections (if you’re crazy enough). And yes, it’s really beautiful. But the descent (video will follow) is super cold and usually wet (not this time though). Luckily the organisers offer to carry up some luggage for each participant the night before. So I could descent with some warm gloves, knee warmers, thick jersey and windbreaker. It was my fourth time but the first time I actually was about to enjoy the descent!
