I would like to qualify my earlier posting somewhat: I think that Wahoo got surprised by the license running out. Licensing new, fitting footage to keep the quality and moreover the tone of the Sufferfest videos is a very tall order. They did what they could and @michael.cotty did a splendid job in what was probably a very short amount of time. I mean, you can see it in one video if you are super nitpicky in the changing weather between different shots. Later on in the video he talks about the bad weather they had. So, that must have been quite an effort to keep these workout profiles alive with quality video content. Kudos to Mike and the Wahoo Crew for that.
One thing only: I think it would be better to put the active recovery as the third workout in the row, i.e. de Rates, then del Sol, then Vall d’Ebo and finally Port de Tudons.
Yep. Not discussed in the forums or other social sites is how Wahoo’s handling of software will affect hardware sales. I was a Sufferfest junky and Wahoo fanboy before the Sufferfest acquisition . I’ve purchased two kickrs, a headwind, a few tickers, two bolts, their speed sensor, and have influenced a friend to buy a kickr when he was in the market to buy a trainer. Wahoo’s wrecking ball methodology of destroying software they’ve purchased ( killing RGT, their current chipping away at what made the Sufferfest awesome and unique) has stunk up their brand to me.
The bike industry is in a funk and providing constant software updates when you make your money on hardware is not feasible in the longterm. I mean, how far can you go with bike computer hardware? The end of sensible innovation is near or even in the rear view mirror. They need more (recurring) income from services, but providing great services is a completely different game from building great hardware and releasing it every few years. E.g. I bet they never had to content with licensing race footage before. Who even owns the rights? Eurosport? ASO? And where and for which markets? That’s bound to be a minor nightmare. And a vastly different nightmare from designing, manufacturing, shipping and servicing hardware built on open source android and open source maps and more or less royalty free protocols such as BT or ANT.
If they would kill of Sufferfest, I would guess that they have the numbers to justify it. Maybe it’s just a loud and vocal but extremely small minority of users who enjoy it. If the percentage of all Systm subscribers preferring sufferfest over other content is large enough to justify to extra work in licensing etc. it requires, I guess they will keep it alive in the long term. Anything else makes little business sense, unfortunately.
I agree, he did and always does. Thanks Sir Mike.
@mgboehmer I’m still having issues with why there is no license for the footage in the SUF vids and now, no footage at all. Just OL rides mimicking SUF vids and a statement being made the you don’t even know if some of the SUF vids will ever return. This is all very disturbing to me. As disappointed as I am with the footage in the remasters, at least it was footage. I mean, how am
I supposed to hammer the Thibaut Pinot interval now? No offense to Cotty (I really enjoy his OL workout that includes the VOT at the end) but now there is nothing to drive me. Nothing to push me and Cotty’s voice in this mimick of TINT is not going to cut it. Sorry but it’s not. The one constant in life is change. Change is inevitable but the magnitude of this change? Something is very off here.
Signed….,
Disturbed in SUF
Which translates to….
It’s all about the money.
I would like to take this opportunity and these quotes to say this….Michael Cotty has always done a splendid job in his workouts and OL vids/workouts AND it takes a crew to produce, edit and produce quality vids and workouts and I would never say otherwise about what Cotty and Wahoo has done in that aspect. Now, with that being said and in reference to the OL mimic of the SUF workout TINT, I just don’t know how I am supposed to hammer the Thibaut Pinot interval without the engagement of Marc Madiot hanging out of the team car yelling in excitement with the perfect tune blasting in my ear. They gave us footage and kept the music in the other remasters. What happened here?
Are we seeing the reality of the saying “All good things come to an end.”?
Someone wants money for that old race footage and it’s not Wahoo.
@mgboehmer @Rupert My one BIG suggestion would be to add music into the On Location videos. Musical queues are a very big part of the sufferfest appeal and adding appropriate music into OL could make them more motivating, repeatable and fun. The three Mike Cotty Sufferfest videos are amongst my favourites and it would be great if On Location vids could be a bit more like these at least as far as integrating some music.
@mgboehmer @Rupert I agree with @colin.ledlie about the music. I’m realizing that music has the biggest effect on repeatability for me, far greater than I realized at first. I’m not a race/cycling/sports fan so I only vaguely notice cycling footage. It has to be really mismatched at the level of coasting during a climb effort for me to get it. Plus I’m generally chewing stem during hard efforts and miss video!
I’ve noticed I tend to mute all OL, Prorides, etc and put on a Sufferfest playlist. I don’t want to listen to road noise and breathing. Then I spend the whole ride wishing the music matched the intervals like in Sufferfest workouts.
I would love to have music tracks available for as many workouts as possible!! I wish I’d thought to put that in my survey response!
Absolutely agree on the music, I wish I’d thought of that too
In total agreement with this ^^^^^^.
Music and the timing/synchronisation and ‘appropriate-ness’ of that music with the video footage and workout effort level is unique to Sufferfest to best of my knowledge. That’s what keeps me coming back …..
Cancellara attacking on the cobbles in Nine Hammers with ‘that’ music track is a prime example of superb editing. It’s often the music that gets me through a workout. Also probably why I listen to Sufferfest compilations on Spotify for pleasure.
I rode Costa Blanca: Port de Val d’Ebo (Recharger) this morning. It has a few minutes of music at its beginning and end, which I enjoyed. More, please! Perhaps we could at least have the “Sitting Down is Stupid” song by Floyd Wonder whenever Mike Cotty is out of his saddle, dancing up a hill.
Oh, and I enjoyed the sprint joke toward the end. Very SUF.

I’d get in line for music
It’s coming on Monday …
Thanks for the feedback on the new On Locations, we appreciate you taking the ride and hope you feel better for it! It is interesting how for the same workout you do it with a different stimulus and it feels like a whole new workout/world of pain!
Music is definitely something we can look into adding and something we had talked about previously. On Location has previously not had music in it but we added some in a few sections on these. Obviously everyone has different tastes but would your preference be a soundtrack similar (some of the same tracks) as the old SUF videos or something new that fits better with the On Location vibe and what is already in the vids?
I think what works really well with the SUF soundtracks is that the music matches the efforts, much like the footage, which helps you to feel immersed in it, as opposed to just listening to music whilst you train. Blender is probably my favourite SUF session, and looking at the pain shakes section for example the pace of the music changes between effort a rest.
I LOVE the old tracks except for repetitive instrumentals. Lyrics help me feel like I’m making progress and distract just enough from the suffering and tedium. Instrumentals add to the tedium of cycling to nowhere.
I especially like it when the cadence target matches the tempo/beat of the music. I’d love a bit more rap and alternative to freshen up the selections. I like it when the workout cuts back and forth between the same couple of songs as it goes from interval to recovery to interval.
I also appreciate seeing the title/group on the screen so that I can find the songs I like later. I often listen to a suf playlist and have been known to torture my captive family with my favorites (Coke Machine, Green Light, Sitting Down is Stupid, …)
